Shades of Summer

Shades of Summer

Movies and summer go together like a tall bucket of popcorn and some Peanut M&Ms. From May to September, we’ll celebrate summer in all its shades — passion, nostalgia, wild adventures — on the second Saturday of each month. After a long, sunny day, there’s no pleasure like the cool, dark of an air-conditioned movie theater or, in this case, an art gallery.

First, on May 11, we’ll screen Rear Window, Alfred Hitchcock’s classic 1954 thriller starring Jimmy Stewart as a photographer with a broken leg who spends his summer spying on his neighbors, accidentally uncovering a mystery.

On June 8, join us for Tomboy, a 2011 film by French director Céline Sciamma (Portrait of a Lady on Fire) that beautifully tells a tender coming-of-age story about trans youth and gender nonconformity.

The following month, on July 13, we’ll show the 1953 French classic Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday, a slapstick physical comedy that cements actor/director Jacques Tati’s status as the bridge between Buster Keaton and Mr. Bean.

On August 10, we’ll watch Argentinian director Lucretia Martel’s 2001 film La Cienaga, which introduced the world to her original directorial style with this visceral take on class, nature, sexuality, and the ways that political turmoil and social stagnation can manifest in familial relationships.

Finally, on September 14, we’ll close out the series with Jim Jarmusch’s 1989 comedy-drama triptych Mystery Train, a poetic ode to Memphis, Tennessee, featuring performances from Joe Strummer, Steve Buscemi, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, and more!

All screenings will be held at Headstone Gallery in Kingston. Doors are at 7:30, and movies will start just after sundown. Tickets are free, and all donations will go towards future Kingston Film Foundation programming — and help support our goal of opening a theater in Kingston.

We’ll have concessions and beverages for sale, and while we will have enough seating for everyone, feel free to bring your own chair to get comfy for the show!
